Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and is used to prevent further hair loss by blocking the enzyme involved in regulating the hair follicle. It can also reverse hair loss by reducing the amount of DHT hormone in the scalp.
Finasteride, lactose monohydrate, cellulose, microcrystalline (E460), starch, pregelatinised (maize), sodium starch glycolate (type-A), lauroyl macrogolglycerides, magnesium stearate (E572).
Film coating: Hypromellose (E464), titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 6000, iron oxide red (E172), iron oxide yellow (E172).
Time to take effect
It can take three to six months for the drug’s full effect to occur.
How to take
Patients should always take medication as recommended by their GP, but he usual dose is one 1mg tablet daily.
If breathing difficulties, swelling or hives occur, patients should speak to their GP. Breast swelling or lumps and pain in the testicles have also been reported.
